How to Calculate Comparatio in Abra Payroll

The Comparatio field in Sage Abra can be a highly powerful tool, especially for anyone who wants to find out how much an employee’s maximum salary will be. The calculation of the Comparatio is simple enough:
» Current Pay period salary divided Midpoint of the Salary Grade, the total of which is multiplied by 100.
For this to operate correctly, the Salary grade table would need to be set up with the appropriate math in mind. The fields in a Salary Grade code are:
» Code: How Abra identifies the Salary Grade
» Description: How a user can identify the Salary Grade
» Pay Frequency: The pay Period in which the Salary is to be calculated.
» Minimum Salary: The least amount an employee should be paid within the designated pay period for the salary grade
» Maximum Salary: The Most an employee should be paid within the designated pay period for the salary grade
On rare occasions, it can seem confusing as to what number should go into the Minimum and Maximum salary fields. This can be figured by the following:
» If the pay Frequency is Unit, then the Salary will be the Piece work pay rate
» If the pay Frequency is Hourly, then the Salary will be the Hourly pay rate
» If the pay Frequency is Weekly, then the Salary will be the Hourly pay rate times the Standard work hours per week.
» If the pay Frequency is Biweekly, then the Salary will be the Hourly pay rate times the Standard work hours per two weeks.
» If the pay Frequency is Semimonthly, then the Salary will be the Annual pay divided by 24.
» If the pay Frequency is Monthly, then the Salary will be the Annual pay divided by 12
» If the pay Frequency is Yearly, then the Salary would be their Annual pay

This is also explained in the Abra Help guide, as well as the help file. It therefore makes it important to set the Salary grade Pay frequency to match the Pay frequency on the Job code which the Salary grade is assigned to, otherwise the Comparatio value can be either a lower or higher number than the field can display, as the field displays 5 digits total.

Let’s say for example, that we want to find out what someone’s Maximum pay could be on a Crystal report? The Minimum and Maximum fields in the Salary grades are not exactly available for Crystal report use. The Comparatio, however, is readily available via the Hrpersnl database.

It is also noted in the Abra Knowledgebase, that anyone earning their Maximum for their Salary grade would have a Comparatio of 133.33, higher if they exceed the maximum.

Therefore, as Comparatio equals Job Pay Period Salary divided by the Midpoint of the Salary Grade, and the total multiplied by 10, the maximum salary would be:

Pay Period Salary Divided by the Comparatio, and the total multiplied by 133.33.

The Midpoint values divide each other out in the overall calculation, reducing it to that simple formula. This formula, however, still depends on the Salary grades being correctly set up, as do other reports which deal in salary grade versus current pay comparisons.
